Steelmaking at Port
Kembla History Extras Important (www) Links Invention and innovation are
essential to the Port Kembla Steelworks' strategies for
future success. The Company spends many millions of dollars
on research each year. Research and development is carried
out at major laboratory facilities at Port
Kembla. Research concentrates on
three main areas: Improvements in plant
control using new technologies and computer sensors to
detect change have improved energy efficiency and resulted
in high quality products. Hundreds of millions of dollars
are spent each year to maintain world class facilities at
our steelworks. One project recently
developed at Port Kembla is a thin strip casting plant in
which liquid steel is poured between two rolls to produce
coils of sheet steel. This new process removes the need for
expensive hot rolling facilities and a reheating step,
therefore reducing energy consumption. Characteristics of existing
products are also being improved e.g. thinner tin and zinc
coating which gives better performance, and improvements in
the abrasion resistant finish of COLORBOND® steel.
