Steelmaking at Port
Kembla History Extras Important (www) Links The Port Kembla Steelworks
is expanding its current markets by improving customer
service and refining its product range. The Marketing
Department is dedicated to finding new markets for steel
where previously other materials had been used. One of the most important
services the Steelworks provides to steel users is to help
them understand more about the products available. Marketing
schools and seminars are conducted, information brochures
and videos are produced. An electronic data interchange
system makes it quicker and cheaper for customers to receive
and transmit business and product information. The Steelworks provides free
technical, engineering and metallurgical assistance to steel
customers. A key innovation is the establishment of a
customer support centre, which has extensive web based
resources (see http://www.bluescopesteel.com.au),
as well as call centre support. The Research Centre's
product application laboratories are helping customers
design and fabricate new products (see Research).
The Australian Steel Awards held every two years encourage
new and innovative applications and designs using Australian
Steel. Winners of this award receive valuable marketing and
promotions packages for their product. Currently within Australia,
the largest use of steel (40%) is in the building and
construction industry. Australian steel is used in domestic
housing (dwelling) and industrial buildings such as
warehouses, passenger terminals and offices (non-dwelling).
Civil construction refers to steel used in projects such as
bridges, guardrails and pipelines. Another important use of
steel is in the automotive industry where it features in
both engine components and the bodies of cars. Exports Overseas markets for
Australian Steel are concentrated in South East Asia, North
Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the west coast of the US.
Steel is Australia's largest manufactured goods export. As
such its contribution to Australia's balance of trade is
vital. Over the past three years an average of 40% of our
steel was exported and we are seeking to maintain exports
near this level in the future.
