This unit focuses on the steel industry and is divided into two sections. This second section is a case study of the Port Kembla steelworks as an example of an economic activity operating at the local scale. It reviews the location, nature and ecological dimensions of this particular steel plant. It also looks at linkages within the plant, its economic, social and environmental impacts and the plant's future as a steel making operation. The first section is a global overview of the steel industry. This is available at HSC Online and should be reviewed first because it provides the context for this case study
